CONFIRMED / INTERPRETATION LABELED
Evidence: The best leave first
Status: CONFIRMED (data claims) / INTERPRETATION LABELED (mechanism claim)
Published: 25 Aug 2026. Companion to the LinkedIn panel of the same date.
Claims and grades
1. "691,500 employed in German automotive at end of H1 2026, lowest since the series began in 2005; minus 42,300 jobs (minus 5.8 percent) in twelve months; fastest loss of any industrial branch."
Grade: CONFIRMED. Primary: Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis) employment series, published 14 Aug 2026. Secondary: dpa-carried coverage of the release, 14 Aug 2026.
2. "7,600 positions leave ZF Division E (electrified drives and drivetrain) by 2030."
Grade: CONFIRMED. Reuters, 1 Oct 2025 (agreement announcement by ZF, Gesamtbetriebsrat, IG Metall); electrive, 1 Oct 2025.
Scope notes, stated to prevent misreading: the 7,600 are part of the up to 14,000 announced for ZF Germany in 2024, not additional. Roughly 4,000 of the 7,600 were already executed by the agreement date; 2,200 further exits fixed for the following two years (Reuters, ZF HR chief Corzilius). Avoiding forced dismissals is the agreement's stated goal, not a guarantee; instruments are a severance program (1.25 monthly salaries per year of service for employees under 60), early retirement, and non-replacement of vacated positions. Working-time reduction (35 to 32.5 hours) counts toward the reduction arithmetically.
3. "Fachkraefteeinwanderungsgesetz, 29 letters, the Skilled Immigration Act; Abfindung, 9 letters, the severance package."
Grade: CONFIRMED (trivially; count them). The Act has been in force since March 2020, reformed 2023 with staged entry into force through 2024.
4. "The best leave first." / "Voluntary packages: the labor market picks who goes. It picks the mobile."
Grade: INTERPRETATION, labeled as such. This is an adverse-selection argument: voluntary severance programs disproportionately release employees with outside options. The panel states it as the author's directional claim, not as a measured result. Supporting structure: the ZF program is voluntary-first by design (source 2). Counterarguments acknowledged: retention lists and counteroffers exist; the claim is directional, not universal. The caption claim 'the severance package is winning' belongs to the same class: directional interpretation, anchored by the realized Destatis outflow (claim 1) set against a law still recruiting.
Replaced before publication
The working draft carried "55,000 jobs shed since 2023" (VDA via Reuters, Oct 2025). Replaced before publication by the Destatis H1 2026 series (item 1), which is fresher, primary, and stricter. The VDA figure was not wrong; it was superseded. VDA's own May 2026 statement (Mueller, RND) puts realized losses at about 100,000 from 2019 to 2025 and projects 225,000 by 2035; the projection is excluded from the panel because projections are not signed numbers.
