The auto labor math nobody expects

Claim

Everyone talks about cheap Chinese labor killing European carmaking. The data points somewhere else. Europe can build cars at Chinese labor costs. It just doesn't do it where you think.

I pulled 2024 numbers for three auto ecosystems: Czechia, Germany, and BYD. All verified against primary sources (AutoSAP, VDA, Destatis, annual reports).

Cars produced per worker per year, full sector including suppliers:

  • Czechia: 10.3 (1.45M cars, 141k workers, a record year)
  • Germany: 5.3 (4.1M cars, 773k workers)
  • BYD: between 4.4 and 6.0 (4.3M cars, 969k employees, 75% vertically integrated)

Now add wages. Czech sector average is about 28,000 EUR a year. German is about 68,000 EUR. Result:

Labor cost per car:

  • Czechia: around 2,750 EUR
  • Germany: around 13,000 EUR
  • BYD: 1,800 to 3,600 EUR depending on which wage definition you use

Read that again. Czech plants build cars at labor costs comparable to BYD. In the EU, under EU labor law, 4 hours from Munich.

Caveats exist. German output skews premium, and BYD's headcount includes its Apple assembly business. But the core finding survives: Europe's most cost-competitive auto workforce isn't in Asia. It's in Mlada Boleslav, Nosovice and Kolin.

The strategic question isn't whether Europe can compete on cost. It's why the investment keeps going elsewhere.

Method

Full-sector boundary including suppliers, deliberately different from the company-level cars-per-employee post, which is the point: the sector boundary fixes what the company boundary breaks. Labor cost per car is sector wage average divided by cars per worker for the same boundary.
